About the series
Hugh struggles to cast spells at the Academy at Skyhold. An unexpected apprenticeship gives him a chance to learn and make friends. What begins with a school test grows into a wider conflict across a magical world.
What to expect
The opening pack takes Hugh from a test beneath the school to a journey across a desert. Choose it for learning alongside other apprentices, with magic and teamwork at the centre. Later books expand beyond the academy; do not expect seven school terms.
The audio
Ralph Lister reads the series. The main story is seven novels in six audio purchases because the first two share a recording. The pack lasts 16 hours and 18 minutes.
The Gorgon Incident and Other Stories is an extra collection. It is outside the main-story total here. Save it until after the main books if you want to avoid learning about the wider world early.
Skip it if
You want stat sheets or a school story that stays small. The later books involve war; the school setting is not an age recommendation.
Where to start
Begin with Into the Labyrinth
Start with the Mage Errant: Publisher’s Pack. It contains Into the Labyrinth and Jewel of the Endless Erg, in that order. Your next audiobook is A Traitor in Skyhold, book 3. Do not buy the pack twice.
Mage Errant audiobook order

Books 1 to 2: Mage Errant: Publisher's Pack
About 16 hours
Includes Into the Labyrinth, then Jewel of the Endless Erg. One audio edition for both novels.
Mark of the Fool: Mark of the Fool also follows a student facing a barrier to magic. Choose it for Alex’s struggle with his mark, or Mage Errant for Hugh’s apprenticeship and a shorter total listen.
